The Matter of Britain
The Matter of Britain
I enjoy making lenses at Squidoo. Yes, a weird name but a beaut little Web 2.0, and free. I have a profile page there called Susanna Duffy Lensography.
Here’s the collection I’m putting together on The Matter of Britain.
The Progress of Arthur
It’s not surprising that the Legend of Arthur lives on - it’s a human story, as old as our history, moving, inspiring and a classic tear-jerker.
The Progress of Merlin
Merlin, the wise and mighty wizard and prophet, is the most prominent Celtic element in Arthurian Legend. He has the powers of a great Druid, for he originates deep in the mythic past of the Welsh.
Where was Camelot?
At Camelot, it is said, Arthur established a brilliant court with the greatest and most chivalrous warriors in Europe, the Knights of the Round Table.
Vortigern
Vortigern is remembered in legend as one of the worst Kings of the Britons. We hear of him in the Story of Arthur, when Merlin makes his prophecy at Dinas Emrys.
The passing of Arthur
Did Arthur die or did he disappear? The question of his mysterious departure is one of the most intriguing of Arthurian legends, either King Arthur is still alive in Avalon and awaiting his moment to return, or he was killed in battle. I like to think that Arthur, the Once and Future King, has joined the other Sleeping Heroes, and will return to help Britain in her darkest hour.
Arthur’s Women
There are several women who play a role in the undying legend of Arthur. Here are a few of the strong women who challenged the chivalric order and wove a powerful magic.
Tristan and Isolde
The tale of Tristan and Isolde was one of the most influential romances in the medieval period, predating and influencing the Arthurian romance of Lancelot and Guinevere.
